Three Reasons You Should Never Diet.

By: Dr. Bhanu Abohari

Diet culture is everywhere. From the Keto fanatics to the Clean-Eating enthusiasts and Weight Watchers zealots, thousands hail the benefits of various diet plans. Whether you’re looking to lose a large amount of weight, or just trying to drop a few pounds, one of your first courses of action is probably to diet. When you jump on the latest fad bandwagon, you support a multi-billion dollar industry that profits by convincing us, that we are inherently flawed. But!

Studies and Experts agree that diets don’t work. And here’s why-

Diets are not Healthy:

reasons not to diet, diets are not healthy

When you diet, your body fights back. Putting your body on a Restrictive Eating Plan limits the intake of various food groups and robs your body of essential nutrients and elements that it requires to function normally. Such Dieting when continued for long term presents several symptoms in the body similar to those in Deficiency Diseases. You may experience bloating, tiredness, constipation, and bad breath, which can point out underlying diseases such as Heart disease, Kidney failure, and Muscular Degeneration. With the Diet on your mind all the time, imagine the Mental Bandwidth it’s going to take up throughout the day making you feel anxious and irritable. Overtly Restrictive Diet also causes permanent unhealthy changes in the brain, binding it to enforce “compensatory mechanisms” to regain the lost weight, making it one of the three reasons you should never diet.

The Weight-Loss is not Permanent:

Other than being unhealthy in the long run, diets are not a sustainable solution to a weight loss. You try so-and-so trendy diet for three months and lose 15 pounds. You’re psyched. After going back to your normal eating patterns, though, the weight creeps back on. Traci Mann, a UCLA associate professor of psychology and lead author of a study, said, “You can initially lose 5 to 10 percent of your weight on any number of diets, but then the weight comes back. We found that the majority of people regained all the weight, plus more. Sustained weight loss was found only in a small minority of participants, while complete weight regain was found in the majority. Also, Researchers found that subjects on the severely low-calorie diets lost weight at a slower rate. The idea is that, when you severely restrict calories, your body overcompensates by slowing down your metabolism to make the most of the calories you are consuming.

Diets are not Natural:

diets are not natural, reasons you should not diet

Human bodies are not meant to be subjected to dieting. Your body is designed through evolution and natural selection to eat as and when hungry and on food sources that are most readily available in the locale. When you go on a diet you try to change the composition and structure of your body through a process that is alien to it. Your body then tries to fight back by resisting the weight loss and/or gaining it back. Our ancestors’ primary concerns were satisfying the “hunger” and that is permanently wired to our psyche. Studies show that Dieting is primarily pursued by those who already have enough food on their plate. Philosophical as it may sound, but the underprivileged hardly have the drive or the motivation to seek the “ideal” weight, mainly because that is not what our bodies are engineered to do. Adding another one to the three reasons you should never diet.

The next time you think about dieting, consider these factors. Dieting never guarantees you’ll look better, feel better, or become a better person. In fact, more harm than good can come from them, if proper boundaries are not in place.
