Sitting for prolonged periods of time without adequate stretching and strengthening exercises can cause a condition known as the anterior pelvic tilt aka APT, which leads your spine to have an exaggerated curvature. The occurrence of APT has become more prevalent due to our modern lifestyle. Most of us spend a long time sitting for our jobs. Together with a limited amount of exercise, it is not surprising that so many individuals suffer from APT.

What is Anterior Pelvic Tilt?
APT is a change in posture that happens when the front of the pelvis rotates forward, and the back of the pelvis rises.
Researchers suggest that as many as 85 percent of men and 75 percent of women, who do not show any symptoms, have an APT.
In addition to affecting your posture, this condition can cause back and hip pain.

How to know if you have APT?
APT is easy enough to recognize. There are two telltale signs:
● Exaggerated lumbar curve
● Bulging abdomen, even if the person has low body fat

What causes it?
This condition is caused by excessive sitting or lack of physical activity.
What does APT result in?
It affects posture and the shape of the spine, and may lead to other symptoms like,
- lower back pain
- hip and knee pain
- incorrect posture
- forced hip and knee rotations

How APT Impacts Your Life?
Many individuals, particularly women, are not comfortable with their appearance, as the rear end extends, sometimes severely. Or the fact that their lower belly is sticking out. These can also be caused by APT as well – even when there’s no apparent pain.
Additional detrimental effects that result from APT can occur due to the greater compressive load on the vertebrae causing stress fractures, increased disc pressure, and even ruptured/herniated disc can occur. The reason can be traced to an initial incidence of APT. Additionally, balance can be affected, of particular concern in older individuals who may be prone to falling. So APT can be the start of something even more serious than a posture issue, if not dealt with properly.
